7 Quick Tips to Prepare for Your LLM

Considering doing an LLM abroad in 2024? Here are a few quick tips for my Brazilian lawyer colleagues:

1. Timing Matters:

Studying abroad can enhance your international legal career, but plan wisely. Be aware that an LLM alone won’t necessary open new doors – it can be a challenging step to take on and often just 1 part of the bigger puzzle in terms of career progression.

2. Early Preparation:

Start the application process early (I recommend to start 1 year before the course begins!).The process includes rearranging your life, successfully taking English aptitude tests, filling forms, preparing your CV and essays, and securing professional references. Be careful not to underestimate the time and effort involved.

3. Thorough Course Research:

Choose courses that are well aligned with your professional goals. Seek advice from trusted contacts, and carefully consider teaching methods, lecturers, and your personal requirements. Armed with the research you can carefully tailor the applications to your chosen programs. Apply to multiple jurisdictions for flexibility and potential scholarships.

4. CV Essentials:

Focus on academic achievements, work experience, and relevant extracurriculars. Keep it well-structured, short (under two pages), and error-free.

5. Craft a Strong Personal Statement:

Highlight accomplishments, motivation, future plans, strengths, and life experiences. Ensure sincerity and coherence, and be mindful of your online image.

6. LinkedIn Usage:

Utilize LinkedIn for a professional online presence. It’s often checked during application processes.

7. Choose Referees Wisely:

Opt for referees who know you well and can provide detailed insights. Prioritize those you’ve worked closely with over high-profile but distant connections.
